THE ORIGINAL.
THE BENCHMARK.
THE LEGACY PLAY.
30 years later, still, nobody does it better...everybody has a backpack. But none of them look like a Basketball Bag. The moment an athlete lays eyes on the HOOP SAQ®, they instantly know what sport it was built for. Its unmistakable silhouette delivers the original, perfected architecture:
Instant Basketball Identity: The only silhouette that looks purely "basketball" at first glance.
The Perfected Triple Threat: Structured solid-lid Ball Compartment, isolated (ventilated) Shoe Compartment that fits up to a pair of size 17s, and dual insulated Drink Bottle Pockets.
The Winchester Benchmark: Just like the Winchester Model 94 defined its category for over a century after its patent expired because nobody could design a better rifle for deer hunters, the HOOP SAQ® remains the undisputed gold standard in Basketball Bags 30 years later.
In 1995, athletic accessories were generic, chaotic duffels where dirty sneakers, sweaty gear, and game balls collided. HOOP SAQ® revolutionized the sports world by engineering dedicated, isolated performance architecture—officially opening the "Basketball Bag" category with the National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA) in 1996.
A patent can expire, but category origin and authentic hardwood heritage cannot be manufactured in an R&D lab. The Winchester Model 94 remained the #1 deer rifle in its class for over 100 years—long after its patent ran out—because every competitor tried to design a better gun for that specific use and failed. HOOP SAQ® is that exact benchmark on the court: three decades later, nobody has engineered a better basketball bag.
Now, the original architect is bringing it back, independently. HOOP SAQ® and the full SPORT SAQ® line relaunch under American Performance Brands (APB), a new U.S. company built to own the category it created, make the bags in America, and sell them direct to 176 million serious players worldwide. AI-powered marketing and social media now let us reach those players directly, at a fraction of what it cost in 1995.
The main performance architecture is known as the HOOP SAQ® Triple Threat: three isolated performance zones engineered to better organize, store, and transport an athlete's gear:
The first-ever ball compartment on an athletic bag. Form-fitted and semi-rigid, it locks the rock dead-center at the end of the bag without collapsing interior storage space. A structured, solid lid secures the ball while providing prime, flat real estate for team/school logos and/or player names and numbers.
An isolated, moisture-sealed compartment along the bottom of the bag, fitted with a ventilation grommet to keep dirty, sweat-soaked kicks away from clean gear. Built from 420D nylon to fit up to a pair of size 17 basketball high-tops, it also gives SPORT SAQ® valuable interior space for co-branded inserts and footwear partnerships.
Two thermal-lined side pockets keep drinks cool and easily accessible, while isolating condensation from dry gear and electronics. The same pockets made HOOP SAQ® a natural fit for beverage co-branding; Coke, Pepsi and Dr Pepper/7Up all ran custom programs with them.
Engineered Utility & Advanced Specifications
600-Denier Vinyl-Backed Polyester Construction: Built with heavy-duty, commercial-grade vinyl-backed polyester to deliver long-term structural rigidity, puncture resistance, and complete moisture protection on indoor hardwood and outdoor blacktop surfaces. One of the first bags on the market to incorporate this innovative fabric into production.
Ventilated Wet Gear Isolation Vault: A dedicated rear compartment engineered to separate sweat-soaked uniforms, practice jerseys, and wet gear from clean apparel and personal tech in the clean/dry main chamber.
Lockable Valuables & Tech Pocket: A secure, quick-access compartment protected with heavy-duty zipper tracks to lock down phones, watches, keys, and wallets during court play.
Modular Sling-to-Dual-Strap Conversion: Another industry first, the ergonomic strap architecture that instantly unclips and reclips to heavy-duty bottom-corner D-rings, allowing players to switch from an over-the-shoulder carry bag to a sling-style balanced backpack.
Solid Structured Ball Lid (for easy personalization/customization): Unlike competitor bags that use flimsy, sagging mesh nets, the HOOP SAQ® features a rigid, form-fitted lid that provides clean, flat canvas space for team embroidery, player names/numbering, and school logos.
Built-In Partner Revenue (Size 17+ Shoe Vault): The bottom shoe compartment holds an interior slot for brand inserts or QR codes. Every bag in a player’s hands becomes a daily, owned media channel that SPORT SAQ® can potentially monetize through footwear, beverage and team cross-merchandising partnerships.
Nearly 50% Camp Penetration: 3,748 bags sold to 7,500 campers. Across all historical direct-marketing and co-merchandising campaigns, HOOP SAQ® averaged a 23% conversion rate. Our projections for the relaunch use a far more conservative 2.875%, just 1/8 of that.

5+ Years at #1 on eBags.com: Held the undisputed highest (#1) consumer-rating in the Sport & Duffels category over legacy corporate incumbents such as Adidas, Jansport and others.
Institutional & Enterprise Validation: Manufactured tens of thousands of custom co-branded bags for corporate giants such as Coke, Pepsi, Dr Pepper/7Up, (1997 NCAA Final Four) alongside consecutive sellouts at Spokane Hoopfest.
APB (SPORT SAQ) is launching into the five markets where basketball is played most seriously: 176 million committed players who need a better way to organize, store and carry their gear.
China: 140+ Million Serious Players (Urban blacktop & digital court culture)
United States: 15+ Million Serious Players (AAU travel circuits & tournament pipelines)
Philippines: 15+ Million Serious Players (Unmatched cultural penetration & national affinity)
Europe (Club/Slavic Matrix): 4+ Million Serious Players (Disciplined junior academy networks)
Japan: 2+ Million Serious Players (High-end streetwear crossover & boutique basketball)
Total Addressable Market (TAM): 176,000,000 serious, hardcore ballers.
Historical Performance Baseline: a 23% average conversion rate across all past direct-marketing and co-merchandising campaigns, peaking at 44% at NBC Camps.
Target Penetration: 2.875% (calculated by conservatively discounting the proven 23% historical baseline by half, then half again, and half again to ensure an audit-proof floor).
Projected 3-Year Unit Volume: 5,060,000 units
(Modeled on industry-standard 30% Institutional / 70% Retail volume distribution)
Teams & Institutional Channel (30% volume | 1.52M units @ $55 – $60 Institutional ASP):
$83.5M – $91.1M
Consumer & Retail DTC Channel (70% volume | 3.54M units @ $79 – $89 MSRP):
$279.8M – $315.2M
Total Blended Gross Revenue Potential:
$363.3M – $406.3M
NOTE: The model assumes 80–90% of volume is new sales won from generic duffels and competitors. It excludes the SOCCER SAQ®, SOCCER SAQ® JR and SPIKE SAQ® line extensions, and any revenue from footwear, beverage or team merchandising partnerships built into the bag. Projections are forward-looking estimates, not guarantees.
Curtis Medlen, Founder | “The Bag Guru”
Thirty years ago, I sketched the world’s first basketball bag on a napkin and sewed the prototype on my mother’s sewing machine. Now I’m bringing it back, with the experience to build it right this time.
Category Creator: Designed HOOP SAQ® (the world’s first basketball bag), SOCCER SAQ® (the first soccer bag) and SPIKE SAQ® (the first volleyball bag), protected by U.S. Design Patent D363,600.
True Firsts: The dedicated ball compartment, insulated drink bottle pockets on an athletic bag, and the duffel-to-backpack strap conversion system.
Full-Cycle Operator: Took the line from sketch and prototype through patenting, manufacturing, enterprise co-branding and national retail sellouts.
30 Years of Player Insight: Built every original pattern by hand and knows how ballplayers actually pack, carry and show off their gear.
The APB Team
I’ve teamed up with good friend and partner Mike Hollis, a nine-season NFL kicker and Pro Bowl selection who grew up playing soccer. Mike leads football and soccer for the SPORT SAQ® line from Jacksonville, Florida, and brings the credibility, network and competitive drive of a pro athlete to the relaunch.
The original architect. The proven playbook. Undisputed category execution.
American Performance Brands (APB)
APB is the parent company relaunching HOOP SAQ® and the full SPORT SAQ® line. It is being formed as a C-corporation, with "SPORT SAQ USA" as the operating brand beneath it. The plan is simple: own the category we created, build the bags in the United States (MADE IN USA), and sell direct to players, teams and camps worldwide.
Built in America, Built to Scale: APB will start with lean U.S. sewing and subassembly, then engineer an automated, robotic bag factory in the United States. Domestic automation cuts ocean freight and overseas lead times, and gives APB the capacity to manufacture for other brands, not only its own.
HOOP SAQ® is Phase 1. A pipeline of sport-specific bag designs follow, including soccer, volleyball and a premium golf bag concept, across the top five global markets listed above.
The Media Engine & Cultural Catalyst
The Book: Supported by the upcoming release of “HOOP SAQ: The Untold Story of the World’s First Basketball Bag”.
UN World Basketball Day Relaunch: Launch synchronized globally on December 21st to generate earned media across business, sports and sneaker journalism, focusing on today's hottest social media influencers and podcasts.
Tier-1 Media & Celebrity Seeding Blitz: Advance review copies of the book paired with exclusive production samples of the bag will be seeded to top sports media e.g. Disney/ESPN, Inside the NBA, SLAM, Sports Illustrated, and marquee culture icons and well-known basketball lovers to trigger synchronized organic unboxings alongside the official press release.

For 30 years, the biggest names in sports have fought over the sneaker wall and treated bags as an afterthought. That left the category we created wide open. APB is taking it back, as an independent American company restoring the legacy of an American sports bag brand.
We are now speaking with a small number of accredited investors about our first round. It funds the essentials for launch: forming the company, protecting the IP, finishing production prototypes and standing up U.S. sewing operations ahead of the Q2 2027 rollout.
What investors get:
A proven product with an unmatched legacy: the World’s First Basketball Bag, a title no competitor can ever claim, backed by a documented sales success history.
A defined market: 176 million serious players across five markets, with a conservative 2.875% penetration model.
A direct-to-consumer model: higher margins and direct ownership of the customer relationship.
Multiple revenue streams: team and institutional orders, DTC retail, line extensions and built-in partner placements.
A founder who has done it before, and a book-driven launch on December 21.
